Description

There's a modern tendency to depict dragons with back legs just and with their wings as front legs, because it is believed that pterosaurs did. As depicted in the film version of The Hobbit by 15, an example is Smaug.

A dragon is a mythical representation of a reptile. As serpents, dragons were envisaged in antiquity. Since the Middle Ages, however, it is now common to portray dragons with legs.

Dragons are often shown in modern times with a body such as a huge lizard, or a snake with two pairs of lizard-type legs, and ready to emit fire from their mouths. The dragon has bat-like wings growing out of its back. A dragon-like monster with wings but only a pair of legs is called a wyvern.

Aži Dahāka is the source of the modern Persian word azhdahā or ezhdehā اژدها meaning 'dragon', frequently used of a dragon depicted upon a banner of war
. The Persians believed that a dragon's infant will be the exact same color as the eyes of the mother. Different dragons and dragon-like creatures, all of them malevolent, are mentioned in Zoroastrian scripture. .

Dragons also have been prevalent in different types of media such as films, TV shows, and video games. These forms of media have a reach on the society which makes the depiction of the dragon prevalent. In these movies and others that contain dragons, dragons are major participants in the plot and character development. A notable dragons in films include Smaug in The Hobbit, Saphira from Eragon, Draco from Dragonheart, and King Ghidorah from the Godzilla franchise.

European dragons exist in folklore and mythology among the overlapping cultures of Europe. Dragons are portrayed as using cave or an underground lair or living in rivers. Despite often being portrayed with wings they are described as having tough or armoured hide, and therefore are seldom described as flying.

There is a widespread belief that before cartographers used the Latin phrase hic sunt dracones, i.e., 'the dragons are here', or 'here be dragons', to denote dangerous or unexplored territories, in imitation of the rare medieval practice of putting sea serpents and other mythical creatures from the blank areas of maps. However, the only known use of the exact phrase is in the Latin form 'HC SVNT DRACONES' on the Lenox Globe .
