Description

Ezra 8:29 'View and keep them until you weigh them before the leading priests, the Levites and the heads of the fathers' households of Israel in Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD.'

Mark 13:33 'Take heed , keep on the alert ; for you don't know when the appointed time will come.

Luke 21:36 'But keep on the alert At all times, praying that you might have strength to escape all these things which are about to occur, and to stand before the Son of Man.'

Daniel 9:14-notice 'Therefore the LORD has kept the calamity in store and brought it on us ; for the LORD our God is righteous with respect to all His deeds which He has done, but we haven't obeyed His voice
.

2 Samuel 12:21 Then his servants said to him, 'What is this thing that you have done? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept ; but when the child died, you arose and ate food'

Song 5:2 'I was asleep but my heart was awake . A voice! My beloved was knocking: 'Open to me, my sister, my darling, My dove, my perfect one! For my head is drenched with dew, My locks with the damp of the night.'

Keep watch literally means to abstain entirely from sleep, pass sleepless nights, to be sleepless, to lie awake and think about to remain awake, and then figuratively to remain alert, to stay vigilant and fully aware of threatening peril, 'to be alertly worried about' .

The image was drawn from shepherds keeping watch over their flocks . Shepherds had to stay alert to be able to safeguard their flocks from predators. They needed to understand the sheep and watch them carefully enough to know when a sheep was missing or sick. They needed to go after the strays and try to restore them to the flock. They had to lead them to pasture and wash water .
